Assam: Illegal timber smuggling thrives in Boko’s Sontali area, locals call for immediate intervention by authorities
The Sontali area of Boko is witnessing a surge in illegal timber transportation, with valuable tree logs being smuggled openly. The West Kamrup Forest Division, however, has remained notably silent on the issue, despite increasing concerns about environmental damage.
Reports indicate that deforestation in the West Kamrup Forest Division continues at an alarming rate, with illegal logging activities taking place without any effective intervention. A network of traders has established a thriving timber smuggling operation, seemingly immune to any legal repercussions.
In a shocking revelation, locals claim that timber logs are being transported during daylight hours using horse-drawn carts, an activity allegedly happening right under the noses of the forest and police authorities, who are accused of turning a blind eye to the situation.
The illegal timber trade follows the Boko–Chamaria–Sontali route, with smuggled logs reportedly being moved with ease and regularity. The residents of the area are calling for urgent action and stricter enforcement from the relevant authorities to curb this ongoing environmental threat.
