A boat accident on the Brahmaputra River at Satkata Char, near the Joghihopa border area of Bongaigaon district, has left a one-and-a-half-month-old infant missing. The mishap took place on Saturday, December 8 raising concerns over riverine safety.
The ill-fated motorized passenger boat was en-route from Usungar Char to Chapar Bazar, carrying approximately 35-40 people. While navigating the river, the vessel abruptly capsized, plunging passengers into the waters.
Emergency response teams, including river police from the Majer Alga outpost under Goalpara district’s Panchratna River Police Station, rushed to the site. Most passengers, including men and women, were rescued alive. However, despite intensive search efforts, the infant remains untraceable.
Authorities confirmed that the boat sank entirely, leaving no visible debris on the water’s surface. Rescue operations are ongoing, with police and local divers combing the area in search of the missing child.
