Assam: Jorhat Medical College Hospital tense after clash, doctor and 3 MBBS students injured

A doctor and three final-year MBBS students of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) were allegedly assaulted following a confrontation with a group of local youths on Friday, September 18 night, triggering tension on the hospital premises.

The injured were identified as Dr Dhiraj Pegu and three medical students, including Abhilesh and Sukumar Das. According to preliminary information, the group was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons during the altercation, leaving them injured.

Following the incident, a large number of JMCH hostel residents gathered outside the hospital and sought action against those allegedly involved in the assault. Police personnel reached the spot and intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.

The situation subsequently returned to normal after the person identified as the main accused reportedly surrendered before the police.

Dr Pegu and the three students were treated at JMCH. Their condition was reported to be stable, although one of the injured persons is said to have sustained a serious injury to the leg.

Meanwhile, some local youths alleged that the confrontation followed an incident in which a few medical students allegedly broke beer bottles at a public place near the hospital.

Police have initiated an investigation to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible for the assault. Further details are awaited.
