Assam: Kaldiya river erosion threatens to devour village and market

A wave of devastation looms over a remote village and market in Assam as the Kaldiya river wreaks havoc with relentless erosion. The river's fury threatens to swallow Kawaimari Block No. 11 and Banko Market, located in the underdeveloped Paka Betbari Sabti area.

Reports indicate a vast region on either side of the river is under threat. The situation has grown increasingly dire, with several shops in Banko Bazaar already swept away by the water in the past week alone.

"If the water level continues to rise in this manner every year, then there is chances that the river will destroy the entire village. Thankfully this year due to the PWD road, it was saveed, but not in the coming year. Hence, I request the government to take action on this erosion. I have observed, the government is trying to research on the big rivers. Though this is a small river, its route is long, I presume, placing Geo Bags will help to some extent. If that is also not possible then bags and rocks should be placed", said one local while speaking to the media.

Residents express growing concern about the lack of action from government departments. They allege that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the plight of the area's minority communities who are most at risk from the erosion.

The Kaldiya river has transformed into a relentless force, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty for the village and market's residents. Urgent intervention is needed to prevent a complete catastrophe and safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those dwelling on the river's precarious banks.
