Assam: Karimganj covered in filth on Gandhi's birth anniversary, residents voice anger over municipal apathy

While the nation honors the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, celebrating his birthday with a renewed focus on cleanliness and civic responsibility, Karimganj town in Assam paints a dismal picture of neglect. In stark contrast to Gandhi's principles of sanitation and transparency, garbage is piled along the roadside at several spots across the town. Alarmingly, garbage has been found piled right outside the municipality chairman's residence, leaving residents fuming and raising concerns over the blind eye shown towards the town's cleanliness.

On a day of national reflection, coinciding with Mahalaya, the town's streets stand littered with waste, a testament to what locals describe as the municipality’s inaction. Many residents have expressed frustration over the continued failure of the authorities to maintain basic cleanliness standards, especially on a day of such national significance.

“The municipality is supposed to uphold the ideals of cleanliness, but the situation here shows how inactive they are,” remarked a visibly upset youth Congress state secretary, who joined others in condemning the state of the town. Calls for accountability grow louder as Karimganj faces increasing criticism for its handling of waste management.
