Assam: Karimganj DC to file FIR against Meghalaya University VC over fraudulent OBC certificate

The District Commissioner of Karimganj, Mridul Yadav stated that an FIR will be lodged against the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, Mahbubul Hoque for allegedly using a fraudulent OBC (Other Backward Class) certificate.

As per the Karimganj DC, the certificate which was issued to Hoque on August 24, 1992, was cancelled on August 20, 1996.

This comes after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a case will be filed against Hoque for allegedly obtaining an OBC (Other Backward Class) certificate fraudulently from the state's Karimganj district 32 years ago.

After CM Sarma criticised the then Karimganj District Commissioner for not initiating a proceeding against Hoque earlier, the present DC of the district, Mridul Yadav said that the certificate which was issued to Hoque on August 24, 1992, was cancelled on August 20, 1996.

He also said that the certificate which was counter-signed by the then District Commissioner of Karimganj was withdrawn by the District Administration, further adding that the said person belongs to "neither Maimal or the Kiran community."

In a letter to the Assam government, the DC stated, "On close examination of the caste issue register, it is found that the OBC certificate of the above-mentioned person was cancelled on 20.08.1996. (copy of the issue register is enclosed herewith for your kind perusal) The copy of the cancellation order/certificate cannot be traced out as yet."

Furthermore, Yadav added, "This is for favour of your kind information and necessary action."
