The Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union held a press conference in Nimua, Baksa district, Assam on April 6 to express gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the recent Cabinet decision to withdraw the 'D-Voter' (Doubtful Voter) status previously imposed on members of the Koch Rajbongshi community.
Kapil Dev Singh, Central Secretary of Akraachur, attended the press meet and highlighted the community’s appreciation for the Chief Minister’s intervention, following multiple rounds of dialogue. He stated that the Cabinet’s move marks a positive step toward addressing long-standing grievances.
Singh also emphasized that the Koch Rajbongshi community had been unfairly targeted due to political conspiracies, resulting in their wrongful categorization as D-Voters, which had led to years of social and political marginalization.
In addition, Singh noted that the Chief Minister has assured the community that the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status will be addressed before the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
However, the Students’ Union warned that if these promises are not fulfilled in due time, the Koch Rajbongshi community will not remain passive. They expressed hope that the government would act swiftly and honor its commitments.
