Tensions flared on Sunday after Laharighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar was reportedly detained briefly by agitated locals who blocked his vehicle, accusing him of unilaterally forming a regional panchayat committee without wider consultation.
The confrontation escalated when Congress workers joined the protest, intensifying the standoff.
Despite being initially cornered, the MLA managed to escape from the scene unharmed. Police forces rushed to the area and quickly brought the situation under control, dispersing the crowd and restoring order.
Eyewitnesses said locals surrounded Nazar’s convoy, demanding the dissolution of the newly formed panchayat committee, which they alleged had been constituted without public participation or consensus.
The protest turned heated as slogans were raised against the MLA and his supporters.
