Ahead of the much-anticipated visit of All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday conducted an inspection of the public meeting venue at Shanti Nezora Club in Ban Gaon under the Boko-Chhaygaon constituency in Kamrup district.
During the visit, Gogoi was accompanied by senior party leaders including MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das, Dudhnoi MLA Jadab Swargiary, and other Congress members. Preparations are reportedly in full swing for the July 16 event, which is expected to draw Congress leaders and workers from across Assam, including mandal, block, and district unit heads, as well as recent panchayat election candidates.
Addressing the media at the site, Gogoi launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government over its eviction drives, accusing it of favoring corporate interests and political allies. “The land of Assam today is under the grip of the 'Mama-Mami'. The BJP government is carrying out inhumane eviction drives while ordinary citizens suffer,” Gogoi alleged.
He further claimed that the people of Assam are losing trust in the current regime and are actively seeking a political alternative in the wake of what he described as widespread injustice and administrative irregularities under the BJP.
The upcoming visit by Kharge and Gandhi is being seen as a significant political event for the Congress in Assam, with expectations that both national leaders will be briefed on key issues affecting the state. Gogoi said the public meeting would serve as a platform to highlight these concerns and re-energize the party’s grassroots machinery.
Gogoi also weighed in on the issue of language politics, offering remarks on the promotion and prevalence of the Bengali language in Assam, though specific details of his comments were not disclosed.
