Assam: Landslide near USTM in Jorabat damages petrol pump, two vehicles

A massive landslide struck the Jorabat area on the outskirts of Guwahati early Friday, October 2, damaging a petrol pump near the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) and two vehicles, including a bus.

The landslide occurred around 3 am near the 10th Mile locality, when a section of the hillside behind the fuel station collapsed. A portion of the petrol pump was buried under debris following the landslip.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far.

The incident triggered panic among residents, with soil and debris reportedly continuing to slide down the slope after the initial collapse.

Local residents have alleged that extensive earth-cutting on the hillside for construction work may have weakened the slope and contributed to the landslide. They have also raised concerns over the safety of the petrol station and people living in the surrounding area.

Further details on the extent of the damage are awaited.
