Assam: Large cache of prohibited items seized from Sribhumi District Jail, probe underway

In a major security breach, authorities recovered a substantial cache of prohibited items from Sribhumi District Jail during a special search operation, raising serious concerns over jail security and internal monitoring mechanisms.

The seizure included 29 mobile phones, improvised weapons, wall-cutter blades, packets of blades, cigarettes, lighters and other objectionable materials, all of which are strictly banned inside correctional facilities.

The operation was carried out based on confidential intelligence inputs by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) Manas Pratim Choudhury, under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Leena Doley. The surprise search was conducted inside the jail premises to curb illegal activities and prevent misuse of communication devices by inmates.

Officials, however, have not yet ascertained how the banned items were smuggled into the jail or who facilitated their supply. The recovery has prompted a detailed investigation to identify possible lapses and fix accountability.

Police sources confirmed that a thorough probe is underway, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
