Assam: Large consignment of suspected Burmese betel nuts seized at New Bongaigaon Junction
In a fresh crackdown on the illegal inflow of Burmese betel nuts, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at New Bongaigaon Junction seized a substantial consignment from the down-bound Kamrup Express on Wednesday, December 10. The operation was launched following inputs about suspected contraband being transported through passenger trains.
During the raid, GRP personnel recovered around 40 sacks of suspected Burmese betel nuts, weighing an estimated 3 quintals and 200 kilograms. The seized goods were promptly taken into custody as part of the ongoing enforcement drive against illicit betel nut smuggling, a trade that has seen a worrying spike across the region.
Officials at New Bongaigaon GRP have initiated a detailed investigation to trace the source of the consignment and identify the network involved. Authorities believe that uncovering the masterminds behind the continuous illegal supply may take time, as the inquiry is still at an early stage.
The seizure marks yet another attempt by enforcement agencies to curb the rampant trade of Burmese betel nuts, which continues to flood markets despite repeated crackdowns.
