Assam: Ledo tea estate residents rally against rising drug menace

A large protest rally and awareness meeting were held on Sunday at Ledo Tea Estate in the 83rd Margherita constituency, as residents, students, and local organisations joined forces to address the growing problem of drug abuse and illegal liquor in the area.

The event, spearheaded by the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) Ledo sub-branch, along with ACMS Ledo primary unit, the local Village Defence Party, the Ledo Tea Estate Women Committee, and concerned residents, aimed to combat the rise of narcotic substances that have plagued the community in recent years.

Local leaders highlighted that Ledo Tea Estate has increasingly become a hotspot for illegal liquor operations and drug trafficking. This unchecked spread has not only harmed the health and well-being of residents but has also led to a surge in immoral activities and the arrival of unidentified individuals, raising safety concerns among families.

ATTSA issued a clear warning to those involved in drug trafficking, stating that if such activities continue, strong community-led action will follow. Organisers emphasised that the rally was not just a protest but a declaration of zero tolerance toward drugs within the tea estate.

Residents expressed strong support for continued vigilance and community cooperation to reclaim the safety and dignity of their area.
