Assam: Leopard spotted on CCTV in Dhubri sparks safety concerns among residents

Residents of Jhagrarpar, a locality near Dhubri town in Assam, are on edge after a leopard was caught on CCTV early this morning, roaming close to a residential property. The footage has confirmed growing suspicions of a leopard’s presence in the area and has heightened fears of a potential conflict between humans and wildlife.

Fresh paw prints found near the same area have further validated the animal's presence. Local residents, already alarmed by previous unverified sightings, are now staying indoors during early and late hours, concerned for their safety and that of their children and pets.

The Dhubri Forest Department responded quickly, sending a team to the site shortly after reports emerged. A search operation is underway, with officials working to track the leopard and possibly tranquillise and relocate it if necessary.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, avoid secluded areas, and immediately report any additional sightings. While leopards are generally not aggressive unless provoked or threatened, close encounters in residential zones significantly increase the risk of injury or panic-induced incidents.

No attacks or injuries have been reported so far, but forest officials emphasised that minimising human-leopard interaction is now the top priority. The department is also evaluating whether habitat loss or food scarcity may have driven the animal closer to human settlements.
