A resident of Fakiragram, Kokrajhar, Assam, filed a complaint alleging that he was beaten by Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Executive Member (EM) Arup Kumar Dey and his Personal Security Officers (PSOs). The incident took place around 10:30 AM on September 9 near Fakiragram Medical Nursing College, where the victim, Ashok Shyam, was working on the road.
According to the complaint, some local youths blocked Dey’s vehicle as it passed by. Shyam, who was nearby on his bike, claims he was targeted and attacked. EM Dey, along with his PSOs, allegedly stepped out of the vehicle and physically assaulted him. Shyam says he was beaten and pushed to the ground by four men, including Dey.
The attackers reportedly also took Shyam’s bike. Bystanders later took him to Kokrajhar MRM Hospital for treatment. The complaint was filed after some delay due to Shyam’s injuries.
Shyam has asked for an investigation and has identified two other individuals, Ashok and Kanai Shyam from Pochagarh village, as being involved. The police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and are currently investigating.
Speaking to India Today NE, Shyam said, "I was beaten with guns that are meant to protect the public."
The Officer-in-Charge of Fakiragram police station speaking to India Today NE confirmed that an FIR has been filed against EM Arup Dey and an investigation is ongoing.
In response to the incident, a delegation from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), led by Dr. Rezaul Karim, central organizational secretary, visited Shyam’s residence to assess his condition. The delegation has demanded a proper investigation into the matter.
