Assam: Locals protest inside police station over alleged police brutality at wedding ceremony in Golaghat

Tension gripped the Ghiladhari Police Station in Golaghat as angry residents staged a protest inside the police station premises, alleging police brutality during a late-night incident at a wedding ceremony in a nearby village.

According to local residents, three police personnel from Ghiladhari Police Station allegedly resorted to indiscriminate baton charging while responding to a minor altercation at a wedding function in Rupkaliya village, located close to the police station. Several people sustained injuries in the incident, with at least seven reported to be in serious condition.

The injured have been identified as Ajay Karmakar, Puja Karmakar, Lakhirram Karmakar, Bikash Karmakar, Bijoy Karmakar, Sanjay Karmakar and Biswajit Karmakar.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the police team arrived at the wedding venue to defuse a small dispute but began using force without conducting proper inquiries. Residents further claimed that the police entered multiple homes in the village and assaulted women and children.

It was also alleged that the village defence force leader was severely beaten during the incident. Victims have accused the three police personnel of being under the influence of alcohol at the time, a claim that has heightened public anger and outrage.

Following the incident, affected families along with local residents gathered at the Ghiladhari Police Station, creating a tense and chaotic atmosphere as they demanded accountability. Protesters called for strict disciplinary action against the accused police personnel and sought immediate and adequate medical treatment for those injured.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations. The situation in the area remains tense, with locals demanding a fair and transparent inquiry into the incident.
