Assam: LPG shortage sparks protest, road blockade at Margherita gas supply office

Widespread anger over the shortage of LPG cooking gas cylinders triggered protests and a temporary road blockade in Assam's Margherita on June 12, as consumers accused distributors of irregular supply and delays in cylinder delivery.

According to reports, more than a hundred consumers gathered outside the Margherita Gas Supply office early in the morning in the hope of obtaining LPG cylinders. However, many alleged that they were unable to receive cylinders despite waiting for several hours, leading to mounting frustration among customers.

Protesters claimed that the region has been facing an acute shortage of cooking gas due to irregular supply. Consumers also complained of delays in receiving cylinders even after booking them and alleged irregularities in the distribution process.

As tensions escalated, a large number of agitated consumers staged a demonstration in front of the gas agency and briefly blocked a nearby road, disrupting vehicular movement and causing traffic congestion in the area.

Following information about the protest, personnel from Margherita Police and officials of the Margherita Co-District administration rushed to the spot. The situation was brought under control after discussions between the authorities and the protesters.

Residents said the ongoing LPG shortage has severely affected daily life, with many households struggling to secure cooking gas cylinders.

The protesters demanded immediate steps to ensure an adequate and regular supply of LPG cylinders in the Margherita region and urged the concerned authorities to intervene urgently to resolve the crisis.
