Assam: Lumding-Silchar railway line closed indefinitely after freight train derailment

The Lumding-Silchar railway line has been indefinitely closed following a freight train derailment last night, causing disruptions in passenger travel and triggering panic among commuters.

The incident occurred in a 110 km stretch between Harengajao and Jatinga Lampur stations when the engine of a freight train bound for Badarpur derailed due to heavy rains over the past two days.

Passengers stranded at Lumding station have been facing challenges as ticket prices for private buses have surged, reaching up to Rs 1400 from the usual Rs 300.

The North Eastern Frontier Railway (NFR) has cancelled several passenger trains in the wake of the incident, further exacerbating the situation for commuters, particularly those heading to Silchar.

The closure of the railway line has also affected thousands of voters who had traveled from places like Bangalore and Kolkata to Badarpur Silchar with hopes of participating in the second phase of elections. However, allegations have surfaced regarding the railway department's failure to take prompt action in assisting stranded passengers. Some affected individuals have accused railway police of resorting to lathi charge as passengers protested against the lack of assistance.

Amidst the chaos, uncertainty looms over when train services will resume, with the NFR unable to confirm any definitive dates. The derailment underscores the challenges posed by inclement weather conditions and highlights the need for improved infrastructure and contingency measures to ensure the safety and convenience of railway passengers in the region.
