Assam makes history: ‘Roi Roi Binale’ screens at 4:30 AM as makers recall Zubeen’s 19-year old dream

An emotional wave swept across Assam on Friday, October 31, as fans gathered in massive numbers to witness the release of Zubeen Garg’s final cinematic creation, Roi Roi Binale.

Theatres across the state overflowed with admirers, some attending shows as early as 4:30 a.m. — a historic first for Assamese cinema — turning the day into both a celebration and a heartfelt farewell to the beloved icon.

Director Rajesh Bhuyan, speaking to India Today NE, said, “This is the last movie in which Zubeen Da has acted. It was his dream to make a musical film — one filled with songs and soft romance, where audiences could sit together and enjoy. He had been planning this for 19 years, and we’ve been associated with it for the last three. Today, that dream has come true with a pan-India release. There are around 600 shows today, and all are booked. For the first time in Assam, a movie is being screened at 4:30 a.m. We’re overwhelmed by the public’s response. People have shown the world what Zubeen means to us. He used to say, ‘Just see how big this film will become and how it’ll break all records.’ I’m happy to see that happening, though deeply sad he isn’t here to witness it.”

Scriptwriter Rahul Gautam described Roi Roi Binale as “a reflection of Zubeen’s soul.” He said, “Everything about Zubeen Garg was positive — he always spread hope. This film was his 18–19-year-old dream. I began writing it in 2022, inspired by his vision of art, artistry, love, and resistance against negativity. The film carries glimpses of his ideology. I’m not counting numbers; this is a celebration of love between the people of Assam and Zubeen. If he were here today, he would probably have scolded me a bit after the premiere.”

Producer Shyamantak Gautam expressed mixed emotions, saying, “We’re happy with the overwhelming response from the public, but it’s heartbreaking that Zubeen isn’t here to see it. Even at 4:30 a.m., when it’s still dark and raining in Guwahati, people waited patiently for the show to start. Zubeen always wanted to take Assamese cinema to the next level — and today, that dream is coming true.”

According to UFO Moviez India’s General Manager (Sales and Distribution) Sourav Dutta, Roi Roi Binale marks the biggest release in Assamese cinema history. “So far, 91 screens across the Northeast and nearly 90 more in the rest of India will screen the film,” Dutta told PTI. “Almost all shows for the next week are sold out or filling fast. The emotional connection to Zubeen Garg is immense, and the demand is extraordinary.”
He added that 14 additional screens will be introduced to meet growing demand, with new projectors being installed daily. “I have never seen such demand for any film in this region in my entire career,” Dutta said, adding that the film is being projected by major content providers like UFO, Cube, and KSS.

In a milestone for Assamese cinema, Roi Roi Binale is also reaching audiences in cities such as Lucknow, Indore, Patna, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kochi, Jaipur, Surat, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Coimbatore, and Goa — places that have never screened an Assamese film before. There are even requests for screenings from Nepal, though not yet confirmed.
