Assam: Man arrested in Dibrugarh for alleged extortion, links with banned ULFA

Police in Assam's Dibrugarh district have arrested a man for allegedly demanding extortion money and acting as a linkman for the banned militant outfit ULFA, officials said on Monday, July 6.

The accused, identified as Mondeep Changmai, a resident of Changmai Gaon in Lengeri under the Tingkhang police station area, was arrested by Tingkhang police.

According to police, a case has been registered against Changmai under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Police alleged that the accused was involved in extortion activities and acted as a conduit for the proscribed insurgent organisation.

Following his interrogation, Changmai was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Police said further investigation into the case is underway.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the alleged extortion or the nature of the accused's purported links with the banned outfit.
