Assam: Man arrested in shocking Nagaon murder case, victim identified after a month

A major breakthrough has been made in the sensational murder case of a young girl in Nagaon, with police arresting the prime accused nearly a month after the crime.

Acting on leads from the preliminary investigation, Nagaon Police apprehended Saddam Hussain, a car driver, from Morongial in Nagoan district. During interrogation, Hussain reportedly confessed to the murder of 17-year-old Namrata Engtipi, a resident of Dhenatghat in Karbi Anglong.

According to police sources, the incident occurred on the night of June 16, when the accused and the victim got into a heated argument while travelling together in a car. In a fit of rage, Hussain allegedly strangled Namrata and later disposed of her body near the Shiv Temple in Difloo, a locality in Nagaon.

The case remained unsolved for weeks, as the identity of the deceased could not be confirmed. It was only on July 17, nearly a month after the murder, that police managed to establish the identity of the girl through sustained investigation.

Namrata had been reported missing since June 15, the day she left her home in Karbi Anglong, informing her family she was heading to Difloo. Her disappearance and the eventual discovery of her body had sparked concerns and calls for justice from the local community.
