Tension gripped Ballamguri village under the Gossaigaon subdivision of Assam’s Kokrajhar district after a dead body was discovered in a secluded part of the village on Monday evening. The recovery of the corpse has triggered panic and speculation among residents.
The body was found leaning suspiciously against a tree in a deserted area near the outskirts of the village. Upon discovering the remains, alarmed locals immediately notified the police.
A team from Gossaigaon Police, accompanied by the executive magistrate, reached the location and retrieved the body in accordance with legal procedures. An abandoned bag was also found near the deceased.
Preliminary identification efforts are underway, with an ATM card recovered from the body bearing the name “Bijoy Dutta,” potentially pointing to the deceased's identity. However, police have stated that the victim’s exact background and the reason for his presence in the village remain unknown and are currently under investigation.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the man, reportedly unfamiliar to the area, had been seen heavily intoxicated the previous evening at Daukha Bazaar in Ballamguri. Locals said he was drinking with a companion and later became visibly inebriated. Concerned villagers reportedly arranged for him to be transported back to Gossaigaon town in an e-rickshaw.
Authorities are now probing how and when the individual returned to Ballamguri, and whether foul play or self-harm was involved. The unexpected death has left the local populace disturbed, as speculation mounts over the mysterious turn of events.
Police have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and have appealed to anyone with additional information to come forward.
