Assam man injured as forest team’s firecracker misfires while trying to drive away elephants in Bokakhat

A man sustained injuries on November 1 after a firecracker used by the forest department misfired during an operation to chase away a herd of wild elephants in the Kuruwabahi area of Bokakhat, Assam.

According to reports, a herd of elephants had descended from the Karbi Hills into the plains of Bokakhat in search of food, triggering panic among local residents. The incident took place on the evening of October 31 at Nepalikhuti village in Rajabari, when forest personnel were attempting to drive the herd back into the forest.

During the operation, a firecracker meant to scare the elephants away accidentally exploded near a local resident, Birbal Ghatowal, injuring him. He was immediately rushed to Bokakhat Komola Miri Civil Hospital, where he received medical treatment.

Forest officials later confirmed the incident and assured that safety measures will be reviewed to prevent similar mishaps during future elephant drive operations. Meanwhile, the presence of wild elephants continues to cause anxiety among villagers in the Bokakhat and adjoining areas.
