Assam Police in Boko arrested a man for allegedly extorting money by posing as a member of the banned outfit ULFA (Independent).
The accused, identified as Shankar Rabha, a resident of Krishnai in Goalpara district, was nabbed from Jarapara following a trap laid by the police.
According to officials, Rabha had demanded Rs 1 lakh from businessman Arbind Roy of Bonggaon, Boko. Acting on a complaint filed by Roy, police apprehended Rabha while he arrived to collect the money.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Rabha had previously extorted ₹1 lakh from the same businessman. Before making the fresh demand, he allegedly issued a demand note and sent a WhatsApp message identifying himself as “Lieutenant Nayan Asom” of ULFA (I).
The operation was led by Officer-in-Charge (In-Charge) Munna Pachani of Boko Police Station. Police confirmed that the accused is currently under intensive interrogation.
A case has been registered at Boko Police Station (Case No. 281/2025) under Section 308(5) in connection with the incident. Authorities are probing whether Rabha has links with other extortion rackets operating under the guise of the proscribed militant group.
