Assam: Manas National Park may stay open year-round for tourists

Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Assam, is planned to remain open for tourists throughout the year, including the rainy season, following discussions between the BTC tourism department and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

BTC Executive Member for Tourism, Dharm Narayan Das, announced the plan on Monday during a programme at Golagaon in Baksa district. He explained that the proposal aims to boost tourism, capitalizing on the rise in visitor numbers after peace returned to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Das laid the foundation stone for a new welcome gate at Golagaon, which was recently declared a “Green Village”. Around Rs 40 lakh has been allocated to develop Golagaon under the Green Village initiative.

Manas National Park, famous for its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, typically closes during the monsoon season due to difficult weather conditions and safety concerns. However, authorities believe that improved security and infrastructure now make year-round tourism feasible, potentially offering a major boost to local livelihoods and the region’s economy.
