The Mangaldoi Civil Hospital, the primary healthcare facility for the poor in Darrang and Udalguri districts, is under scrutiny for its deplorable conditions and alleged misuse of funds. Despite receiving annual development funds, the hospital lacks basic amenities, forcing patients and staff to endure severe hardships.
Patients at the hospital are often treated under candlelight during nighttime power outages, with nurses relying on mobile phone torches to perform their duties. Even the Rs. 1,000-a-night private cabins, meant to provide better comfort, suffer from the same lack of electricity and essential facilities.
Recently, an elderly woman was admitted to Mangaldoi Civil Hospital due to deteriorating health. Her family was appalled by the hospital's conditions, which lacked fans and a suitable environment for recovery. The woman had to leave after a day because of these issues but was readmitted when her condition worsened.
Questions have arisen regarding the allocation and utilization of development funds. Despite the significant budget, the hospital's state has not improved. Adding to the controversy, a mathematician from the hospital was detained by Mangaldoi police two days ago for involvement in a scholarship scam, suggesting deeper issues of financial mismanagement.
The community's trust in the hospital is eroding as the reality of the hospital's neglect becomes more apparent. The visible decay of the facility starkly contrasts with the expected standards of healthcare development, leading to widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
