Assam: Margherita marks 42nd Abhiruchi Sports Day with enthusiastic participation

Like other parts of Assam, the 42nd Abhiruchi Sports Day was observed with great enthusiasm in Margherita on Wednesday, September 3 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Arjun awardee Bhogeswar Baruah.

The celebration was organised by the Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Margherita Regional Committee, with active support from the local community. The day-long programme took place at the playground of Margherita Public Higher Secondary School and witnessed vibrant participation across events.

To mark the occasion, a marathon race was flagged off early in the morning from Powai Railway Gate, culminating at the school playground. The race featured both men’s and women’s categories, drawing a large number of competitors.

Adding to the festive spirit, traditional sports and fun activities such as kabaddi, musical chairs, and cockfighting competitions were also organised, reflecting the cultural flavour of the celebration.

The event not only paid tribute to Assam’s legendary athlete Bhogeswar Baruah but also aimed to foster sportsmanship, unity, and community engagement among the youth of Margherita.
