Assam: Margherita transforms into spiritual hub as 133 namghars unite for Sankardev birth anniversary
Margherita's Makumkilla area witnessed unprecedented religious fervour on October 3 as over 133 namghars from across the co-district came together to mark the 577th birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.
The landmark celebration, centred at Bajalni Barnamghar, featured a massive Bhagavat procession that drew devotees from across the region.
The joint platform of namghars—representing one of the largest such collaborations in recent times—organised the four-day event that began on October 2 and continues until October 5.
The day's proceedings commenced with the simultaneous hoisting of 133 religious flags, symbolising the unity of the participating namghars. Devotional chants of 'Hari Naam' echoed throughout the area as the procession wound through local streets.
The programme included multiple segments: a tribute ceremony honouring the Vaishnavite saint's legacy, a Naam Prasanga discourse exploring his teachings, and a condolence session for Assam icon Zubeen Garg.
Local organisers described the atmosphere as deeply spiritual, with continuous devotional activities planned throughout the celebration period.
