Assam: Margherita weekly market's dangerous location near railway tracks poses threat to locals

The Margherita weekly market, a century-old establishment located in the heart of the town, poses a significant danger due to its location on both sides of the railway tracks.

Originally held every Sunday, the market has now become a daily affair, despite the risks involved with trains passing by every morning.

This situation presents a considerable risk of accidents, prompting concerns among local residents. However, neither the railway department nor the Margherita Municipal Board has taken action to relocate the market to a safer area.

As a result, buyers and sellers continue to operate in this hazardous environment, trading various goods as they have for many years. Local residents have appealed to the authorities to move the market to a safer location to prevent potential mishaps.

The presence of trains regularly passing the market heightens the danger, yet no steps have been taken by the Margherita Co-District, Margherita MLA, Margherita Municipal Board, or railway authorities. This inaction places the daily operations and lives of people at risk.

Traders and shopkeepers at the historical Margherita market have urged the authorities to take immediate measures to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
