Assam: Mass fish deaths ignite public outcry in Boko over industrial pollution

Residents in Boko have raised concerns after dead fishes were found floating in Kharkhari River. Raising alarm over supposed industrial pollution that might have led to the mass death of fishes, locals have raised fingers against Sualkuchi Industrial Development Centre as the source of the contamination, alleging that industrial waste has been irresponsibly discharged into the river.

The incident has not only alarmed the community but has also raised critical questions about the practices of nearby industries.

Among the implicated parties, Brahmaputra Biochem Pvt. Ltd., a spirit manufacturing company, has drawn particular ire from the community. Locals accuse the company of dumping chemical waste into the river, creating toxic conditions that have devastated indigenous fish populations, including 'Puthi', 'Rohu', and 'Borali' varieties of fish.

The situation has led to distressing scenes, with reports indicating that some locals have begun collecting the dead fish despite potential health hazards. Moreover, residents have reported a pervasive smell of spirits emanating from the river, adding to their alarm and strengthening their demands for swift action.

Public frustration continues to mount as calls for accountability and a comprehensive investigation grow louder.
