A massive fire broke out at the Jama Masjid in Guwahati’s Maligaon on Sunday evening, causing significant damage to a temporary structure located on the mosque’s rooftop.
The fire, which reportedly erupted in the evening, was brought under control after quick action by fire and emergency services.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames and thick smoke billowing from the rooftop of the mosque, leading to panic in the densely populated area. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and have launched a probe to confirm the exact cause.
Local residents and mosque committee members have expressed shock over the incident, urging the administration to ensure safety audits of religious and public structures in the area.
Fire department officials have advised caution and called for immediate inspection of electrical setups in nearby buildings to prevent similar incidents.
