Assam: Massive eviction drive launched in Goalpara, over 600 families evicted from 1500 bighas of land
The Goalpara district administration commenced a large-scale eviction drive on Monday morning to reclaim approximately 1,500 bighas of government land encroached upon in the Hasila Beel area.
The operation, spearheaded by the civil administration with full support from the police, is aimed at clearing 667 illegally occupied households, along with various unauthorised structures.
According to official sources, the encroached land also comprises five schools and a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project, which have been functioning without authorisation on public property.
Ahead of the eviction, the administration undertook a comprehensive notification process. Notices were formally served to all illegal occupants, and public announcements were made through banners and loudspeakers, urging residents to vacate the premises by June 15, 2025.
Despite the warnings, many structures—including houses, boundary walls, shops, buildings, and even private water pipelines and bore wells—remain on the site. These are now scheduled for demolition during the ongoing operation.
Goalpara Police have implemented extensive security arrangements to maintain law and order during the drive and prevent any untoward incidents.
Officials stated that the eviction is part of a broader campaign to recover encroached government land and restore it for public welfare projects and sustainable development.
