Assam: Massive fire ravages Sivasagar market area, losses run into lakhs

A major fire swept through the Babupatty area of Sivasagar town late on November 13, reducing several business establishments to ashes and causing property losses worth several lakhs of rupees.

The blaze, which broke out near the Bepari Patty Mosque, spread rapidly across adjoining shops, fuelled by stored goods and closely built structures.

Thick smoke engulfed the locality as residents and shopkeepers rushed out to salvage what they could.

Firefighters from multiple units and local police have been battling the flames for hours, but the blaze continues to rage despite intensive efforts. Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the fire.

No casualties have been reported so far, but officials said an assessment of total damage will take place once the situation is brought under control.
