'Assam medical faculty to get AIIMS-like benefits, will retain talent in state': Himanta Biswa Sarma

The Assam government has unveiled a comprehensive package to retain top medical talent in the state, matching benefits offered at premier institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The state cabinet approved several key measures aimed at empowering senior faculty and officials at medical colleges. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that medical college faculty will now receive support for vehicle purchases, with the government covering interest payments while the principal amount is deducted from their salaries.

"In today's #AssamCabinet meeting we have taken an important decision to empower our senior faculties and officials of Medical Colleges through assured career progression, academic support, etc. These policies are comparable to ones offered by AIIMS & will retain talent in Assam," Sarma stated.

The package includes significant professional development opportunities. Faculty members will be funded to attend two national seminars annually, with the government covering travel and accommodation costs. Additionally, they can attend one conference in an Asian country every two years and another in America or Europe every three years, with all expenses paid by the state.

Explaining the rationale behind these benefits, Sarma said, "These facilities were earlier available at AIIMS and not our medical colleges. With these new decisions, the facilities for the faculty members of our medical colleges will be at par with those at AIIMS."

The government has also implemented an accelerated career promotion scheme for medical college faculty, aiming to create a more attractive career pathway for healthcare professionals in the state.
