Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday addressed the pressing issue of muddy water gushing into Guwahati from Meghalaya, stating that Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma will be visiting Guwahati on June 2 to discuss the matter in detail.
Speaking at a press conference, CM Sarma said, “Some water will have to come. If there’s rain in Arunachal, Assam gets flooded. I can’t say water won’t come from Meghalaya—it’s a hill state—but that should not be at the cost of hill-cutting at Jorabat. That’s the issue we’ll discuss.”

The Chief Minister added that the Supreme Court has already issued notices to both Meghalaya and Assam regarding this issue. He expressed hope that with the involvement of the apex court, the matter will move toward a final resolution.
The recurring problem of muddy water and flooding in parts of Guwahati, especially near Jorabat, has sparked public concern, with environmentalists also pointing to unregulated hill-cutting and land degradation as major contributing factors.
The June 2 meeting is expected to involve senior officials from both states and could potentially set the roadmap for an environmentally sound and mutually agreeable solution.
