A large-scale protest erupted in Karimganj against the renaming of Karimganj district to "Sribhumi," with nearly three lakh signatures submitted to the Governor in opposition.
The move, which allegedly stems from concerns that the name "Karim" is seen as too Muslim, has ignited widespread anger among local residents.
Protesting leaders, including Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, voiced strong criticism, claiming the renaming was politically motivated and aimed at sowing discord between Hindus and Muslims.
Speaking at the District Commissioner's office, Choudhury emphasized, "The peace and unity between Hindus and Muslims in Karimganj have remained strong. The Cabinet's decision was made without any consultation with the people or a proper discussion."
Choudhury further warned that if the decision is not revoked, protests of a larger scale would be organized, and legal action would be pursued to challenge the renaming.
