Tension gripped Margherita sub-division following the death of a pregnant woman allegedly due to medical negligence at the Margherita FRU civil hospital. The incident, which occurred on September 17, has led to public outcry and demands for an investigation.
Rabiya Khatun, a resident of Hill View Balukhad, was admitted to the hospital around 11:30 am under the care of gynaecologist Dr Selix Alam. According to Sahadat Ali, the deceased's husband, Dr Alam advised them to immediately transfer the patient to Cherish Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, citing her critical condition.
Ali claims they waited for hours at Cherish Hospital, but Dr Alam never arrived. Dr Abdul Halim, the proprietor of Cherish Hospital, eventually referred the patient to Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. Tragically, Khatun died en route to AMCH.
Mohammed Toufik Khan, a local social worker, condemned the incident, stating that both the mother and unborn child lost their lives due to alleged negligence. Khan called for an impartial inquiry into the matter.
A memorandum has been submitted to the Tinsukia District Commissioner through the Margherita sub-divisional administration, demanding action. Sahadat Ali has urged authorities to cancel Dr Alam's medical license and arrest him to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local officials, including the Tinsukia District Commissioner, Margherita sub-divisional administration, police, and health department, are facing pressure to investigate the incident thoroughly and take appropriate action.
