Assam’s Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Jayanta Malla Baruah, on Monday inaugurated a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at the Katimari waste disposal site in Nagaon town. The project was built with funding under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and aims to improve sustainable waste management through segregation, composting, and safe disposal.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Baruah praised the Nagaon Municipal Board for its efforts in modernizing waste management. He thanked Nagaon-Batadrava MLA Rupak Sharma and municipal officials for their commitment to a cleaner environment. The minister urged citizens to help transform Nagaon into a clean and beautiful district, contributing to the national Swachh Bharat Mission.
MLA Rupak Sharma, also present, commended the Municipal Board’s initiatives and highlighted the MRF as a major step forward in the town’s development. He announced plans to convert the 40-bigha dumping ground into a public park in the future.
The event featured a welcome address by Nagaon Municipal Board Chairperson Ambika Majumdar. Vice-Chairperson Simanta Bora offered congratulations to all involved.
Among those in attendance were Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Devashish Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner Debahuti Bora, Urban Development Authority Chairman Dhruva Sharma, social workers Manimadhab Mahanta and Ranjit Bordoloi, Executive Officer Pankaj Bhuyan, Board Commissioners, other department officials and staff, and a large gathering of local residents.
The MRF project is designed to reduce environmental impact, promote resource recovery, and support safe and efficient waste management practices in the town.
