Assam minister says Guwahati floods due to heavy rain, Meghalaya runoff
Assam Minister Rameswar Teli on July 13 attributed the recurring floods in Guwahati to heavy rainfall and inflow of water from neighbouring Meghalaya, while refraining from commenting in detail on the alleged Ram Mandir donation embezzlement case.
Responding to questions on the city's flood situation, Teli said the excessive rainfall and runoff from Meghalaya were the primary reasons behind the waterlogging.
"The floods in Guwahati are caused by excessive rainfall. So much rain, and water also comes from nearby states like Meghalaya, causing problems. Our government is working to address this. We want the blocked water to drain, and all the people in our GMC are working to do so," the minister said.
On the alleged embezzlement of donations at a Ram Mandir, Teli said the matter was already under investigation and declined to comment further.
"The thefts that took place there was a major incident. Whatever happened, it was shown on CCTV, and the administration has made arrangements. So, I don't want to elaborate on this," he said.
The remarks come amid renewed concerns over urban flooding in Guwahati following heavy monsoon showers and an ongoing police investigation into the alleged theft of donations from a Ram Mandir in the city.
