Assam: Minor girl raped in Chirang, video shared on social media

In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves in Assam's Chirang district, yet another minor girl has fallen victim to a heinous act of sexual violence. The latest case emerged from Basugaon, where a minor was allegedly raped by an individual identified as Gopal Barman.

This incident comes on the heels of a similar horrific event in Runikhata, also in Chirang, where a video of a gang rape had surfaced on social media just a day earlier. In a chilling echo, a video of the Basugaon rape case involving Barman has also gone viral, drawing widespread outrage and condemnation.

Acting swiftly on the complaint filed by the victim's family, Basugaon police have apprehended the accused, Gopal Barman. He has been charged under multiple sections, including C/NO: 29/24 U/S 329(4)/115(2)/75/64 BNS Act R/W Sec 4 of the POCSO Act, as per the FIR lodged on September 4, 2024.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of minors in the region and the growing menace of such crimes being circulated online, exacerbating the trauma of the victims and their families.
