Assam minority body alleges religious bias in Lutumari eviction, demands rehabilitation

An Assam-based minority body has accused the state government of carrying out a discriminatory eviction drive at Lutumari in the Kachua area of Nagaon district, alleging that Muslim families were selectively targeted and demanding rehabilitation and adequate compensation for those rendered homeless.

The Assam Minority Struggle Council (AMSC) (Sankhyalaghu Sangram Parishad) expressed strong resentment over the eviction during a press interaction in Juria, with its central general secretary, Abubakkar Siddiqui, criticising the government's actions.

Siddiqui alleged that the eviction was inhumane and carried out on religious grounds, claiming that bulldozers were used primarily against the homes of people belonging to the Muslim community.

He demanded that the BJP-led state government take immediate steps to rehabilitate the displaced families and provide them with appropriate compensation for their losses.

Warning of an agitation, Siddiqui said the organisation would not remain silent if the government failed to address the plight of the affected families at the earliest.

The minority body further cautioned that it would mobilise people from across the state and organise a large-scale democratic protest against the state government if rehabilitation arrangements were not made soon.

The eviction has raised concerns over the future of families left homeless in Lutumari. However, the allegations of religious discrimination were made by the organisation, and no response from the state government or local administration was available in the statement provided.
