Assam-Mizoram border tension as truckers block highway over alleged harassment

Tension escalated along the Assam-Mizoram border on September 1 after more than 100 truck drivers blocked the highway at Lailapur in Assam's Cachar district, halting the movement of commercial goods bound for Mizoram over allegations of repeated harassment.

The protest, which began on August 31, entered its third day as truckers refused to resume transportation until the authorities provide a permanent solution to their concerns.

The protesting drivers alleged that commercial vehicle operators entering Mizoram frequently face hostility, intimidation and other difficulties. They claimed that repeated appeals to the authorities had failed to ensure adequate safeguards for drivers.

The situation turned tense on September 1 when officials from the Cachar district administration reached Lailapur and attempted to clear the blockade and restore traffic movement.

The move was opposed by the truckers, who intensified the protest by parking heavy vehicles across the highway. They argued that authorities should address concerns over the safety of drivers rather than seek to force them to resume transportation.

The blockade has left dozens of goods-laden trucks stranded along the key interstate corridor, disrupting the movement of essential commodities between Assam and Mizoram.

The transporters maintained that they would not allow commercial consignments to proceed beyond the Lailapur checkpoint until the governments of Assam and Mizoram put in place concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of truck drivers.

District administration officials and police personnel have been deployed in the area to monitor the situation and prevent any deterioration in law and order.

Talks between the authorities and protesting transport workers are underway in an effort to resolve the dispute and restore normal commercial traffic along the interstate route.
