Assam MLA orders demarcation of disputed Nagaon–Karbi Anglong boundary within seven days
Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami on Friday, July 3, directed revenue and forest officials to demarcate the disputed boundary between Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts within seven days, in a move aimed at resolving the long-standing inter-district boundary issue.
The direction came during Goswami's visit to various locations in the Borpani Reserve Forest along with senior government officials. At the concrete bridge over the Borpani River at Baithalangso, which was previously considered the boundary between the two districts, the MLA instructed Kampur Revenue Circle Officer Raji Hlinglenkim Chingchon and Kampur Range Forest Officer Shamim Akhtar to complete the boundary demarcation and install boundary markers within the stipulated timeframe.
Goswami also said the Assam government would ensure the safety and security of members of the Karbi community residing in Nagaon district. He further announced that eligible landless residents would be provided land pattas by the state government.
The MLA also directed Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police Sonmoni Saikia to ensure that no authority from Karbi Anglong forcibly collects taxes or levies, including from sand mining operations, within the territorial jurisdiction of Nagaon district. He asked the police administration to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents and maintain law and order in the border areas.
The Nagaon–Karbi Anglong boundary has remained a subject of dispute for years, with overlapping administrative claims and periodic tensions. The latest directive seeks to expedite the demarcation process and address the longstanding issue through administrative intervention.
