Assam: MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita proposes master plan to revive polluted Bharalu and Mora Bharalu rivers
Addressing the deteriorating condition of the Bharalu and Mora Bharalu rivers, West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita put forth a comprehensive master plan during the budget session to curb the alarming accumulation of waste in these water bodies.
Highlighting the critical state of Guwahati’s three major rivers—Bahini, Bharalu, and Mora Bharalu—Kalita emphasized that the indiscriminate dumping of garbage has turned these rivers into open drains. According to a survey by the Pollution Control Board, Bharalu and Mora Bharalu rank among the dirtiest rivers in the country. Despite the Public Works Department (PWD) carrying out periodic surface-level cleanups, the deep-seated pollution remains unaddressed, posing severe health risks to city residents.
Speaking on the floor of the House, Kalita recommended transferring the responsibility of river cleanup from the PWD to the Water Resources Department for a more effective approach. He also stressed the urgent need for a dedicated water and sewage treatment system to ensure proper filtration and maintenance.
Additionally, he proposed installing light posts and CCTV cameras along the riverbanks to monitor and identify individuals illegally dumping waste. He urged the government to impose strict fines and punitive measures against offenders to deter further pollution.
Kalita's recommendations aim to initiate a structured and long-term solution to protect Guwahati’s vital waterways and safeguard public health.
