Assam: MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed receives grand welcome in newly formed Chamaria constituency

With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, political activities are gaining momentum across Assam. On Wednesday, November 19, evening, Chaygaon Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed received a grand welcome as he entered the newly formed Chamaria constituency in Kamrup district.

The event was organised jointly by the Goroimari Block Congress and Chamaria Block Congress, who led a massive rally from Rajiv Bhawan, Goroimari, to Sonatoli. Hundreds of Congress workers and supporters joined the procession, cheering and welcoming the MLA along the route. Different units of the party—including Mandal Congress, Youth Congress, Booth-level workers, and Panchayat members—greeted him at several points, highlighting strong organisational support in the new constituency.

Upon reaching Sonatoli, the MLA attended a meeting chaired by Chamaria Block Congress president Taizuddin Ahmed. However, the atmosphere briefly turned tense when a small group shouted slogans like “Go back” and “Murdaabad’’ during his reception at Sonatoli market. Police quickly intervened and brought the situation under control.

Despite the disruption, the majority of supporters responded with louder chants of “Rakibuddin Zindabad” and “Welcome Rekibuddin”, turning the market area into a lively show of support.

Addressing the gathering, Rekibuddin Ahmed urged party workers to stay united and strengthen the Congress organisation for the upcoming elections. He expressed confidence that the Congress candidate from Chamaria would secure one of the highest vote shares in the state. He also reaffirmed that under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership, the party is determined to form the next government in Assam.

Later in the evening, the MLA attended the final match of a day-night volleyball tournament at Badla-Rangapani, interacting with local youth and community members.

Rekibuddin Ahmed’s visit has clearly energised Congress supporters in Chamaria, giving the party a significant boost as election preparations pick up pace.
