Assam MLA Rupak Sarma impresses audience with Bhawna performance in Nagaon

In a departure from his usual political role, Rupak Sarma captivated devotees and cultural enthusiasts with his performance in a traditional Assamese Bhaona at Puranigudam Koraligaon Bor Namghar in Nagaon.

The legislator, who represents the Nagaon-Batadrava constituency, was seen portraying the character of Indrajit in the Bhaona titled "Balibadh", staged on Monday night as part of the concluding day of a three-day annual religious festival.

Performing in the traditional Brajavali language, Sarma showcased his acting skills and brought the character to life, earning appreciation from the audience. His performance marked a notable shift from his political speeches, as he immersed himself in the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Assam.

The event also featured popular actor Dipjyoti Keot, widely known for his role as Mohan in the Assamese television serial Beharbari Outpost, who appeared in another demon character during the Bhaona.

Making his debut as a Bhaona performer, Sarma entered the stage with a graceful dance performance and portrayed the role with enthusiasm, reflecting the teachings and ideals of Srimanta Sankardeva.

Speaking on the occasion, the MLA expressed happiness at getting the opportunity to perform in a Bhaona, an enduring creation of Srimanta Sankardeva. He said that as the MLA of Batadrava, the birthplace of the revered saint, it was a matter of pride and privilege to be associated with the state's rich Vaishnavite cultural tradition.

Among those present in the audience was Devashish Sharma, who attended the cultural programme along with a large gathering of devotees and local residents.

The performance highlighted the continued relevance of Assam’s traditional Bhaona culture and drew enthusiastic participation from people across the region.
