Assam: MLA's driver allegedly assaults journalist over parking dispute in Guwahati

A local journalist allegedly faced physical assault from an MLA's car driver during a parking dispute, sparking outrage among the city's media community.

Khairul Islam, who drives for MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, allegedly attacked journalist Mrinal Kuddus on January 29 when the two clashed over a parking issue. Kuddus works for a local news organisation.

The Guwahati Press Club has demanded swift police action against the attacker. Press Club President Susmita Goswami and General Secretary Sanjay Roy highlighted a pattern of harassment faced by journalists, blaming police inaction for emboldening such attacks.

"The police administration's indifferent attitude toward journalists' safety has led to repeated incidents of harassment," the Press Club leadership stated. "Who gave the right to raise a hand against a journalist?"

The media body has called for Islam's immediate arrest, threatening to mobilise journalists for protests if authorities fail to act. The police have not yet issued any statement regarding the investigation into the assault.
