Assam: Moran community resumes indefinite economic blockade in Tinsukia over ST status demand

The Moran community has reignited its agitation for Scheduled Tribe (ST) recognition, launching an indefinite economic blockade from 5 a.m. today, September 15.

The protest, spearheaded by the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) and supported by six national organizations of the community, has brought exports of vital resources such as oil, coal, tea, and timber from Tinsukia district to a standstill.

This renewed stir follows a series of massive demonstrations in four key locations earlier, where the community’s united strength drew nationwide attention.

The Morans, recognized as one of Assam’s indigenous groups, have long been demanding constitutional recognition under the ST category. In a strong warning, they have declared that unless their demand is fulfilled before the 2026 Assembly elections, they will take a decisive stand against the BJP.
