Assam: Mortal remains of accident victim Akanksha Saikia brought home amid public mourning in Charaideo
The mortal remains of Akanksha Saikia, a young academic and cultural enthusiast who died in a road accident in Guwahati, were brought to her residence late Saturday, April 26 night, drawing a large gathering of mourners and well-wishers.
Akanksha, fondly known as “Maina” by her family, died in a tragic accident in Guwahati's Mathgharia area in the early hours of April 26. Her body reached her home around midnight, where relatives, friends, and local residents had gathered in large numbers from the afternoon, awaiting her arrival.
The atmosphere at her residence remained sombre as family members and neighbours paid their last respects. Her mother, Leelawati Saikia, headmistress of Sapekhati Jatiya Vidyalaya in Charaideo district, and her father, Indra Saikia, a former leader of the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), were inconsolable. Her younger brother and close associates were also seen grieving her loss.
Akanksha Saikia was associated with Royal Global University and had earlier been involved with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). She was regarded as a promising young professional with strong involvement in cultural and academic activities.
Known for her interest in the performing arts, Akanksha had obtained the Visharad qualification in Sattriya dance and had conducted workshops on the classical form. She was also actively engaged in theatre and poetry, and had served as the magazine editor of the Sonari College Students’ Union. She was associated with initiatives linked to Bihu performances and was recognised among her peers as a skilled dancer.
Her untimely death has triggered widespread grief across Charaideo district and beyond. Several organisations, including AASU, ATASU, and the Tai Ahom Teachers’ Association, have expressed condolences and paid tribute to her contributions.
Meanwhile, demands have intensified for the immediate arrest of the driver involved in the accident and for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident. Concerns have also been raised by civil society groups regarding the handling of the case by authorities.
