Assam moves to revive Kolong River as CM Himanta Biswa Sarma approves restoration proposal

Efforts are underway to revive Assam’s Kolong River, which has witnessed a decline in its water flow over the years, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma approving a proposal to restore its flow.

Assam minister and Kaliabor MLA Keshab Mahanta shared the development, stating that the process has begun to engage a reputed high-level institution to conduct research and prepare a comprehensive plan for the river’s revival.

The proposed plan will focus on restoring the river’s water flow through a regulated system. The research is expected to assess the measures required to revive the river and develop a suitable framework for its restoration.

Alongside the proposed revival initiative, efforts to clean the Kolong River and control pollution are also continuing. These measures are aimed at addressing the environmental challenges affecting the river and improving the condition of its waterway.

The Kolong River, which has historically been an important part of the region’s natural landscape, has suffered from reduced water flow, leaving sections of its course nearly defunct. Its proposed restoration is expected to help improve the river’s ecological condition and support the surrounding ecosystem.

The restoration plan is expected to take shape following the research and recommendations of the institution selected for the project. Further details on the implementation framework and timeline have not yet been specified.

The initiative marks a step towards restoring the river’s flow and addressing the environmental concerns associated with its declining condition.
